In short
Tipper cylinder overhaul means replacing the full seal kit, polishing (sometimes chroming) the rod, and pressure testing — cheaper and faster than a new cylinder, provided the barrel and rod are neither corroded nor bent. PHS Magnum overhauls telescopic tipper cylinders (Hyva, Meiller, Penta, Binotto, Edbro) working at 200–280 bar.
The tipper cylinder — the most heavily loaded component
The telescopic lifting cylinder is the heart of a tipper. It lifts a dozen or more tonnes of aggregate at 200–280 bar, in mud, dust, and changing temperatures. No surprise it is one of the most frequently repaired assemblies — alongside the cracking body.
Overhaul or replacement — how we decide
After disassembly we assess three things:
- The rod — whether it is straight and free of corrosion pitting. Light marks are polished out; deep corrosion = chroming or replacement.
- The barrel — whether it is oval or dented. Ovalisation means the seal will leak anyway.
- Guides and threads — the condition of the supply port and mountings.
If the barrel and rod are healthy, the overhaul is worthwhile — seal replacement, polishing, assembly, and testing. If not — we honestly recommend replacement.
Overhaul scope
- Removing the cylinder from the trailer (crane up to 10 tonnes on-site)
- Replacing the full set of seals and guide rings
- Polishing the rod (or chroming at a subcontractor)
- Barrel inspection, honing if needed
- Assembly, bleeding the system, pressure and leak test
The cylinder is part of a system
A cylinder failure often comes together with a fault in the pump, control valve block, or valves — tipper hydraulic systems are frequently Hyva equipment. We diagnose the whole system, not just the cylinder, so the repair lasts. Full scope: tipper and half-pipe trailer service.
