Silo trailer renovation – painting process. PHS Magnum Chorula Poland

In Brief

Silo trailer paint renovation at PHS Magnum is a multi-stage process: disassembly → sandblasting Sa 2.5 → epoxy primer → two-coat polyurethane topcoat → reassembly and markings. Own spray booth and sandblasting equipment on site. ISO 9001:2015 certified. Typically combined with aeration overhaul and TDT preparation to minimise total downtime.

Location: Chorula, 4 km from A4 motorway (Gogolin junction), 180 km from the German border. Invoicing in EUR.

Silo Trailer Renovation – Complete Process

PHS Magnum carries out full paint renovation of silo trailers, cement trailers, fodder tankers and flour tankers. We operate our own spray booth and sandblasting equipment, ensuring quality control at every stage. Brands serviced: Spitzer, Feldbinder, Kassbohrer, Berning, Magyar and others — no manufacturer authorisation required.

Why silo trailer renovation is more demanding than standard repainting

A silo trailer is subject to conditions that accelerate coating degradation: bulk material abrasion, pressure vessel cleaning agents, temperature cycling (icy winters to summer sun), and chemical exposure from cement, lime, or polymer granulate dust. Standard automotive-grade paint fails within 2–3 years under these conditions. Industrial coating systems designed for C4–C5 corrosivity categories are required.

A proper renovation is not cosmetic — it directly extends vehicle service life and maintains the trailer’s residual value for resale or re-leasing.

Renovation Steps

  1. Disassembly – removal of external fittings (ladders, handrails, lighting, covers, armature guards)
  2. Inspection and pre-repair – corrosion mapping, weld inspection, ultrasonic wall thickness measurement at critical points. Structural repairs carried out before blasting.
  3. Sandblasting – abrasive blasting to Sa 2.5 (near-white metal, DIN EN ISO 8501-1). Aluminium tanks treated with plastic blast media to avoid iron contamination.
  4. Priming – anti-corrosion primer: epoxy (C4 class) or zinc-rich primer for heavy-duty applications (C5 class). Coat thickness: 60–80 µm, verified by gauge measurement.
  5. Topcoat painting – two coats of polyurethane-acrylic finish in customer colour (RAL/NCS). UV-resistant, chemically resistant, easy to clean.
  6. Reassembly – refitting components, replacement of worn seals, hinges, and fittings.
  7. Marking – application of ADR reflective markings, company logos (cut vinyl or printed), vehicle numbers, capacity plates.

Total dry film thickness: 120–160 µm measured and documented per ISO 9001 requirements.

Materials and Standards

We use products from leading industrial paint manufacturers certified for heavy transport applications. Key standards applied:

StandardScope
DIN EN ISO 8501-1Surface cleanliness after blasting (Sa 2.5)
DIN EN ISO 12944Corrosivity categories (C4/C5)
DIN EN ISO 2808Dry film thickness measurement
ISO 9001:2015Quality management, full documentation

When Is Renovation Worth It?

A full renovation (disassembly + blasting + primer + two topcoat layers) gives the best return on investment when:

  • Vehicle is 10+ years old with heavily faded, cracked, or flaking paintwork
  • Post-accident repainting required after structural repairs
  • Company rebranding requiring new fleet colours
  • Trailer is being prepared for resale or extension of financing

For newer trailers with localised damage, spot repair is sufficient. We assess during the initial inspection and recommend the most cost-effective approach honestly.

Combining Renovation with TDT Preparation

The most efficient approach — and what most of our DACH customers choose — is to combine the renovation with TDT pressure vessel inspection preparation in a single visit:

  • Pneumatic system overhaul (hoses, valves, aeration pads)
  • Safety valve recalibration
  • Seal replacement
  • TDT inspection with inspector on-site at the workshop
  • Sandblasting and repainting of repaired areas
  • Full renovation in parallel

One trip to Poland instead of two. Typical combined turnaround: 12–18 working days for a full renovation + TDT cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Full renovation (disassembly + sandblasting + primer + topcoat) makes sense when the trailer is 10+ years old, has extensive corrosion, or requires rebranding. For newer trailers with localised damage, spot repair is sufficient. We assess and recommend during the initial inspection.

Typically 10–15 working days for a standard silo trailer — includes disassembly, blasting, primer, two topcoat layers (drying time between coats), and reassembly. Complex vehicles with many fittings or structural repairs run 15–20 days.

Yes — this is the most cost-effective approach. We perform pneumatic overhaul, seal replacement, and inspection preparation in parallel with the painting process to minimise total downtime.

Yes — we apply reflective ADR markings, company logos (cut vinyl or printed), vehicle numbers, and any other required markings as part of the standard renovation package.
