Abrasive blasting of silo trailer – surface preparation for paint renovation, PHS Magnum Chorula

In brief

Abrasive blasting to Sa 2.5 (bare metal) is the first and most important stage of silo and cement trailer paint renovation — without it, the new coating does not adhere to the substrate and sub-surface corrosion continues. PHS Magnum has a blast chamber capable of processing full-size silo trailers. Blasting is carried out both as a renovation stage and as preparation for TDT pressure vessel inspection.

Abrasive blasting is not just preparation for painting. It is a vessel condition assessment that reveals hidden corrosion, weld cracks, and areas requiring repair — before a new coating is applied or the vessel goes to the TDT inspector.

Cleanliness grades — explanation

Grade Description Application
Sa 1 Light blast cleaning — visible rust and scale Temporary preservation
Sa 2 Thorough blast cleaning — most rust and old coating removed Lighter coating systems
Sa 2.5 Very thorough — 95% bare metal Standard for trailer renovation
Sa 3 Blast cleaned to visually clean steel — 100% cleanliness Special industrial applications

For silo trailer paint renovation we apply Sa 2.5 — this is the industry standard and required by epoxy + PUR 2K coating systems.

What blasting at PHS Magnum covers

Standard scope:

  • Vessel — all side walls, bottom, end caps
  • Frame chassis — particularly lower sections exposed to salt
  • Axle and suspension shields
  • Access ladder and walkway

Internal vessel blasting: On request or for internal TDT inspection. Open access hatches, blast interior — remove residual corrosion, old coatings, dust. Internal epoxy applied after blasting.

Renovation process — from blasting to finished paint

  1. Vehicle intake — condition inspection, corrosion assessment, documentation photos
  2. Disassembly — remove non-blasted components (lighting, wiring)
  3. Blasting — to Sa 2.5, roughness profile Rz 40–70 µm
  4. Inspection and repairs — welds, voids, defects corrected (within 2 hours)
  5. Epoxy primer — applied immediately after blasting (max. 4 h delay)
  6. Curing and sanding — 24–48 h
  7. PUR 2K topcoat — two layers, curing
  8. Logos and markings — applied or painted to specification
  9. Vehicle return — 5–10 working days from intake

Frequently Asked Questions

Sa 2.5 is the surface cleanliness grade for steel according to ISO 8501-1: blast-cleaned steel with removed mill scale, rust, and old coatings — at least 95% of the surface is bare metal. This is the standard required before professional anti-corrosion coating systems.

Painting over old paint (overpainting) lasts 2–4 years because sub-surface corrosion continues under the new layer. Blasting removes corrosion, mill scale, and old paint to bare metal — the new coating adheres to clean steel and lasts 8–12 years. Without blasting, any renovation is temporary.

Yes. For internal TDT inspection or extensive internal corrosion we perform internal tank blasting through access hatches. After internal blasting, an internal epoxy coating is applied.

External blasting of a full silo trailer (vessel + frame + running gear) takes 1–2 working days. With extensive corrosion or internal blasting — 2–3 days. Epoxy primer must be applied within 4 hours of blasting (bare metal re-rusts quickly).

The TDT inspector may require sandblasting if corrosion prevents assessment of weld or wall condition. For a trailer with extensive external corrosion, sandblasting before TDT inspection is standard practice — the inspector must see bare metal to assess the actual vessel condition.
