How to Prepare a Silo Trailer for the Season

In Brief

Seasonal silo trailer preparation — 8-point checklist before the transport peak: aeration pads, pneumatic lines and valves, compressor (belt, filters, oil), tank welds and corrosion, brakes and suspension, tyres, lighting and ABS, TDT certificate validity. Duration: 2–4 hours. PHS Magnum performs full pre-season preparation including TDT inspection in a single visit. Book early — slots fill in February and August.

Spring and autumn mark the peaks of dry-bulk haulage demand — cement, lime, flour, plastics. A trailer that breaks down in week two of the season is not just a cost; it is a contract risk. Proper pre-season preparation takes two to four hours and prevents most in-season failures.

Pneumatic and Aeration System

The aeration system is the heart of a silo trailer. Worn or hardened aeration pads prevent product from fluidising correctly, causing bridging and incomplete discharge — which wastes the customer’s time and your driver’s.

  • Remove and inspect every aeration pad; replace any that are cracked, stiff or oil-contaminated.
  • Blow through all aeration lines with dry compressed air and check for blockages.
  • Test the pressure relief valves; they must open at the rated pressure, not before or after.
  • Inspect the compressor drive belt for wear and cracks; replace if more than 50 % of the service life has elapsed.

Structural Inspection

  • Walk the full length of the tank looking for corrosion, weld cracks and impact damage.
  • Pay particular attention to the manhole frames, discharge cone welds and tank support brackets.
  • Check all ladder rungs, handrails and walkway grating for integrity and secure fixing.

Braking and Running Gear

  • Measure brake lining thickness; replace if below manufacturer minimum.
  • Check wheel bearing play and repack or replace as needed.
  • Inspect all air hose couplings and gladhands for cracks and secure seating.
  • Verify tyre tread depth and sidewall condition; look for cracking on trailers stored over winter.

Electrical and Lighting

  • Test all marker lights, ABS sensors and brake light function.
  • Check the ISO 7638 connector for pin corrosion.

TDT/TDT Certification

Check the expiry date on the TDT plate. If certification expires during the season, book the inspection before the busy period — not during it. PHS Magnum performs TDT inspections with minimal scheduling lead time and handles all TDT documentation.
