Big-Bag to Silo Trailer Transshipment Without Pneumatic Conveyors – Why It Matters for Plastic Granules

PHS Magnum silo trailers at the transshipment facility – big-bag to silo trailer loading

In Brief

Pneumatic conveyors damage plastic granules through abrasion, breakage and static charge at 20–40 m/s airspeed. PHS Magnum transloads big-bags and octabins into silo trailers using gravity only — no screws, vibration, or pneumatics. The covered hall, cleaning sieve and certified weighing ensure contamination-free, documented handover. 20’ and 40’ sea containers received directly on site.

Plastic granules – whether polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), PVC or polyamide (PA) – are sensitive to mechanical damage. Plastics manufacturers pack them in big-bags or octabins to ensure they arrive intact at European processing plants. The problem arises when they need to be transferred into a silo trailer for onward transport.

Why Pneumatic Conveyors Are a Bad Choice for Plastic Granules

Pneumatic conveyors (venturi blowers and compressors) move material using pressurized air at 20–40 m/s. For sand or cement that’s ideal. For plastic granules it’s not:

  1. Breakage and abrasion – granules hit the pipe walls at high speed. This creates dust that contaminates the batch and can cause quality complaints from the recipient.
  2. Static charge build-up – friction against steel or aluminium pipes generates electrostatic charges. This is a problem for flammable or discharge-sensitive materials.
  3. Contamination – if the pneumatic line is not airtight or has not been cleaned, contaminants from previous transports enter the batch.
  4. Clumping of hygroscopic materials – compressor air contains moisture; for moisture-sensitive materials like polyamide or polyethylene this can cause grain agglomeration.

How We Handle Transshipment at PHS Magnum

We use gravity-assisted manual transshipment with forklift support:

  • The big-bag or octabin is lifted and opened; the granules flow by gravity through a cleaning screen (removing clumps and contaminants) into the silo trailer inlet.
  • No contact with pressurized metal pipes.
  • No electrostatic charging.
  • Minimal material losses.

This method is slower than pneumatic – one silo trailer (approx. 25 tonnes) typically takes 4–6 working hours – but it guarantees the product quality demanded by plastics manufacturers.

What Materials Can We Transship?

We transship virtually all granules and bulk materials packed in big-bags or octabins:

  • PE, PP, PVC, PA, ABS, PS granules
  • Colour masterbatches and concentrates
  • Flour and starch
  • Filter sands and fine aggregates
  • Fly ash and gypsum
  • Free-flowing fertilizers

Infrastructure

We have a covered warehouse (weather-independent), forklifts with up to 5 tonnes capacity, and direct silo trailer loading bays. Single-batch capacity: several dozen big-bags.
