In Brief
Silo trailer downtime costs reach PLN 2,000–5,000 per day when lost freight, fixed vehicle costs, and dispatcher overhead are combined. Emergency roadside repairs cost 3–5× more than planned workshop service. PHS Magnum offers same-day workshop slots, mobile A4 breakdown service, and a parts warehouse covering Spitzer, Feldbinder, and Kassbohrer trailers.
The tractor is standing still. The trailer is in the workshop. The dispatcher’s phone keeps ringing. Every hour without wheels on the road is money nobody will recover — which is why fleet managers and vehicle owners need to know this calculation by heart.
The real cost of a downtime day
When silo trailer downtime is mentioned, most owners think of lost freight. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg.
Lost freight: an average silo trailer (25 tonnes of granules, 400 km Poland–Germany route) generates €350–600 of freight per day. This is the direct loss.
Fixed costs that keep running during standstill:
- trailer leasing instalment: ~€50–85/day
- OC/AC insurance: ~€15–25/day
- driver wages (paid standstill): ~€30–50/day
Contractual penalties: with fixed contracts at manufacturing plants (polyethylene, polypropylene, cement), delivery delays can trigger penalties of €120–480/day.
Total: the real cost of one silo trailer downtime day is €480–1,200. For a week-long repair — up to €8,400 in lost revenue.
Most common causes of unplanned downtime
From our many years of silo trailer servicing experience, most serious breakdowns are avoidable. Here are the faults that regularly immobilise vehicles:
-
Failed pneumatic hose — seals and hoses have a defined service life. Replacement during a planned inspection takes 1–2 hours; a roadside failure — a full day or more.
-
Frozen or leaking shut-off valve — in sub-zero temperatures, valves without preventive maintenance can seize or leak. Roadside repair is often impossible.
-
Expired TDT inspection — a vehicle with an invalid TDT certificate is stopped at the first roadside check. Reinstatement requires a comprehensive preparation process.
-
Damaged inlet or outlet fittings — at unloading in the client’s plant, any leaks can result in a cargo batch complaint or refusal to unload. Aeration pads and fittings in stock →
-
Compressor failure — without a functional pneumatic system, unloading granules or cement is impossible.
Planned service vs. emergency repair — the price difference
This is the key point: planned service costs far less than an emergency intervention.
| Scenario | Repair time | Downtime cost |
|---|---|---|
| Planned hose replacement (inspection) | 2–3 h | ~€70 |
| Emergency roadside hose replacement | 6–24 h | €480–1,200 |
| Planned TDT preparation | 2–5 days (scheduled) | €0 (planned standstill) |
| TDT attempt without preparation → fail | 7–14 days repair | €2,400–9,600 |
| Planned paint renovation | 7–14 days (scheduled) | known cost in advance |
| Post-accident renovation (insurer) | 3–5 weeks | reputation + penalties |
What we do differently from a typical workshop
At PHS Magnum we organise work so that downtime is predictable — not a surprise.
- Quotation within 24 hours — based on photos or inspection we agree scope and timeline
- Scheduled dates — you don’t wait in an open queue; we agree a specific date
- Complete repairs under one roof — pneumatics, welding, fittings, paint renovation, TDT preparation. The vehicle doesn’t travel between workshops
- Ongoing communication — we keep you informed at every stage and about any additional faults found
When to call?
Don’t wait for the first sign of a breakdown. Contact us when:
- TDT expires within 2 months — time for comprehensive preparation
- paint is faded or the trailer has been in an accident — renovation quote
- you notice minor leaks or noise during unloading — preventive fitting replacement
- the vehicle is over 10 years old and has never had a full inspection — time for a technical audit
