The pneumatic system is the heart of a silo trailer. Without functioning valves, aeration pads and pressure lines, the trailer cannot discharge cargo. A pneumatic failure on the road is not just a missed delivery — it means a customer complaint, driver and trailer downtime, and often a contractual penalty.

Pneumatic System Components

Compressor drives the entire discharge system. Common problems: worn piston rings (no pressure build-up), damaged seals (oil leak), worn belt (no drive). A silo trailer compressor works under much greater load than a tractor compressor — any leak anywhere in the system causes the compressor to run at full speed with no output.

Safety and pressure-relief valves are components that operators ignore until inspection refusal. A safety valve opens when the tank’s maximum working pressure is exceeded (typically 3.0–3.5 bar). After years working with cement or lime, the sealing surface corrodes — the valve either leaks at low pressure or locks open and fails to open at overpressure. In both cases the trailer is out of service.

Ball and butterfly valves control material flow. Most common failures: worn PTFE seals (leak under pressure), blockage by residual material (cement, gypsum), stem corrosion. Replacing a DN100 ball valve takes 30–60 minutes.

Aeration pads (aeration mats, fluidisation pads) are porous elements at the bottom of the silo chambers, through which pressurised air flows to fluidise the material. Pads for PE/PP granules last several years. For cement, lime and phosphates, alkaline degradation shortens life to 1–3 years. Symptoms: uneven discharge, material remaining in chambers, significantly longer discharge time.

Pressure hoses and fittings — rubber and metal hoses connecting compressor, tanks and fittings. Common failures: cracks at end fittings (vibration), abrasion, rubber ageing. Hose replacement: typically 1–2 hours.
