Valve Regeneration

Regeneration and replacement of valves on silo trailers and cement tankers: ball valves, butterfly valves, PTFE/EPDM seals. PHS Magnum Chorula, Poland.

In Brief

Silo trailer valve regeneration (ball and butterfly valves DN80–DN200) replaces worn PTFE/EPDM seals and moving components while retaining the intact valve body. Signs of a worn valve: material leakage when closed, stiff lever, air leak under working pressure. Regeneration does not require a TDT inspection — only full replacement of a valve welded to the pressure vessel requires a special inspection. PHS Magnum regenerates valves for Spitzer, Feldbinder, Kassbohrer and all common European silo trailer manufacturers.

Valves on a silo trailer — ball valves and butterfly valves — operate under demanding conditions: 2–3.5 bar pressure, abrasive bulk materials (cement, granules, lime), seasonal temperature swings. A failed valve typically means cargo loss at the customer’s site or inability to discharge.

PHS Magnum offers valve regeneration as a standalone service or as part of a comprehensive silo trailer pneumatic overhaul.

What valve regeneration involves

Regeneration replaces the sealing and moving elements while retaining the serviceable valve body.

Ball valve — what we replace:

  • PTFE seat seal (ball seat)
  • Stem gland (stem rotation seal)
  • Return spring (if damaged)
  • Ball and seat — only if visibly scratched or corroded

Butterfly valve — what we replace:

  • Perimeter seal EPDM or PTFE
  • Stem seal
  • Butterfly disc — if deformed or damaged

When to replace the whole valve instead of regenerating:

  • Body cracked or severely corroded
  • Ball or seat with deep scratches (valve loses seal integrity after regeneration)
  • Valve corroding from incorrect material for the medium
  • Economics: for DN80 and smaller it is often cheaper to buy a new valve than regenerate

Seal material selection by cargo type

Choosing the correct seal material is critical:

Cargo Recommended seal
PE/PP granules PTFE
Cement, lime PTFE (alkali-resistant)
Gypsum PTFE
Flour, starch PTFE or EPDM (depending on sanitary standard)
Phosphates EPDM or specialist fluoroelastomer

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is the standard choice for most bulk materials — chemically inert and resistant to alkaline cement and lime environments.

Brands and models serviced

  • Spitzer BT series — lower and upper ball valves, discharge valves
  • Feldbinder EUT, KIP — butterfly valves DN150/DN200, section valves
  • Kassbohrer SV — standard fittings
  • Koegel Silo / Schmitz SPF — standard ball and butterfly valves

Other brands or non-standard configurations — on enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Valves are the components controlling bulk material flow: ball valves (DN80–DN125) and butterfly valves (DN100–DN200). Regeneration is cost-effective when seals (PTFE/EPDM) or the stem are worn but the body and ball/disc are intact. Full valve replacement is needed when the ball or seat is scratched or corroded.

Material leakage when valve is closed (seal failure), stiff or impossible lever rotation (stem seizure or foreign matter), air leak under working pressure (gland seal failure), burnt or swollen PTFE seal.

Quotation on request after inspection — cost depends on valve size, type (ball/butterfly), and whether regeneration or full replacement is needed. Contact us: +48 604 800 869.

Yes. Feldbinder KIP and EUT use specific butterfly disc geometries. Regeneration by EPDM or PTFE seal replacement in the body is significantly cheaper than a new valve. We stock the required seals or can source them within 24–48 h.

The tank must be emptied and cleaned of residues (cement, gypsum). We don't require special preparation from the customer — we accept the vehicle and prepare it ourselves. For food-grade materials, disinfection is required before disassembly.

Valve regeneration is classed as maintenance service — no TDT review required. Replacing a complete pressurised valve that is welded to the tank requires a special TDT review. PHS Magnum informs you before starting work about what will be required.
