Valves are the components that determine the safe operation of a silo trailer under pressure. A safety valve that does not open at excess pressure — or opens too early — is a hazard for operators and grounds for TDT rejection. A leaking ball valve means cargo loss at the customer’s site.

Types of silo trailer valves

Safety and pressure relief valves

Safety valves open when the tank’s certified pressure is exceeded (typically 3.0–3.5 bar for aluminium silo trailers, 2.0–2.5 bar for some cement tankers). After several years of operation the opening pressure can drift — valves must be regularly tested or replaced.

Ball valves

For controlling the flow of bulk material in chambers and discharge fittings. Most common sizes: DN80, DN100, DN125.

  • Body materials: aluminium, cast iron, stainless steel
  • Actuation: manual (lever), pneumatic actuator

Butterfly valves

For discharge throttle plates and flow control. Typical in Feldbinder KIP and EUT systems.

  • Butterfly valves DN100 / DN150 / DN200
  • Seals: EPDM (standard), PTFE (for aggressive products)

Regulating and other valves

Pressure equalising valves, breather valves, section valves — on order, typically 24–72 hours.

How to identify the correct valve

When ordering valves, please provide:

  1. Trailer model (e.g. Spitzer BT 65, Feldbinder EUT)
  2. Tank serial number (TDT plate)
  3. Working pressure (for safety valves — from the plate or TDT certificate)
  4. Thread or flange size (DN, inches)
  5. Photo of the old valve — often sufficient

The opening pressure must match the certified working pressure of the tank (shown on the TDT/TDT plate). Fitting type: G1/2 or G3/4 (Spitzer BT series), G1 for larger tanks. When replacing, provide the tank serial number or a photo of the old valve.

Ball valves DN80 and smaller with a damaged ball or PTFE seat are more economical to replace. DN125/DN150 and larger — the seal insert can be replaced. We assess this after inspection and advise before any work begins.

Kassbohrer SV I/II/III valves — 24–72 hours on order. Common safety and ball valves for Spitzer and Feldbinder — in stock, same-day dispatch for orders before 15:00.

Replacing safety valves and ball valves is classed as maintenance — no TDT inspection required. Exception: if the replacement involves a pressurised vessel component (flange, welded fitting to the tank) — a special TDT review is required. We advise you before the repair.
