Aeration pads (fluidisation mats) are the components without which a silo trailer cannot discharge its cargo. Each tank chamber has a series of porous pads along the bottom — pressurised air passes through them to fluidise the bulk material, allowing it to flow to the discharge nozzle.

Aeration pad service life

Service life depends primarily on the cargo carried:

  • PE/PP granules — 4–8 years (material does not attack the fabric)
  • Portland cement — 1–3 years (alkaline environment degrades fibres)
  • Lime and phosphate — 1–2 years (chemically aggressive)
  • Flour and starch — 3–6 years (gentle materials, less wear)
  • Gypsum — 2–4 years

Mixed transport of different materials shortens service life. For regular cement/lime operations we recommend replacing pads every 18–24 months or at the first symptoms.

Signs of worn pads — when to replace

You don’t have to wait for a complete discharge failure:

  1. Discharge time increased by more than 30–40% compared to normal
  2. Material pools in one or more chambers after discharge
  3. Compressor runs longer and at higher revs than usual
  4. Irregular sound during discharge (gurgling, interruptions)

Early replacement is cheaper than a roadside breakdown or TDT rejection.

Fitting service

When pads are fitted at our workshop we carry out:

  • Chamber opening and inspection before replacement
  • Cleaning of pad seats (removal of cement/gypsum residue)
  • Fitting to correct torque specification
  • Pressure test of each chamber after fitting
  • Replacement record for TDT documentation

Fitting time: 6–8 hours for a full set (Spitzer BT 65, 3 chambers).

Best to provide: trailer model (e.g. Spitzer BT 65), year of manufacture, tank serial number (from the TDT plate or vehicle registration document). Alternatively: photos of the old pad showing the part marking. We help with identification — just call us.

The replacement itself is not technically complex, but requires: opening the chamber, completely emptying the tank, correct torque on fasteners (over-tightening damages the thread), and a pressure test after fitting. Workshop fitting is recommended to ensure leak-free results.

Worn pads are the most common reason for TDT rejection. The inspector tests the fluidisation system. Replacing pads before a TDT inspection is standard practice — we can carry out both in one visit.
