A silo trailer after 8–12 years looks worn even when the tank is sound and the pneumatic system works. Rusted walls, peeling paint, illegible markings — this is not just aesthetics. Sub-surface corrosion advances invisibly, attacking the metal beneath the old coating. The best prevention is full renovation down to bare metal with a professional coating system.

Coating system — what we use and why

Professional renovation is not choosing a colour from a catalogue. It is selecting a coating system for the silo trailer’s operating conditions: chemicals in contact with the surface (cement, lime, granules), temperature, humidity, mechanical exposure.

Abrasive sandblasting Sa 2.5 — cleaning down to bare metal, removing all old paint, rust and mill scale. Without this step, every subsequent coat is temporary.

Two-coat epoxy primer — adhesion to cleaned steel or aluminium, moisture barrier, sealing metal micro-pores. Thickness: 60–80 µm. Corrosion category: C4 (industrial, aggressive urban/marine environment).

Two-coat PUR 2K topcoat — two-component polyurethane, 50–80 µm per coat. Hardness and scratch resistance, UV-stable (no yellowing), chemical resistance. Durability: 8–12 years under normal operation.

Total wet film thickness: 220–320 µm (compare with automotive: 80–120 µm).

What is included in paint renovation

Standard scope:

  • Tank (side walls, bottom, end caps)
  • Chassis frame
  • Axle and suspension guards
  • Access ladder and walkway platform

Optional extras:

  • Aluminium elements (renovation preserving aluminium texture)
  • Reflective markings (required by regulation — renewed at every renovation)
  • Company logos and lettering
  • Anti-corrosion treatment of bolts and fasteners (nyloc/inox)

When to combine renovation with other work

The trailer spends 7–14 days in the workshop. The ideal opportunity to carry out simultaneously:

  • Aeration pad replacement — chambers are already accessible during painting disassembly
  • Valve and seal replacement — routine pneumatic service
  • TDT documentation preparation — if the certificate is approaching expiry
  • Minor tank weld repairs — with the painter and welder in the same location

Overpainting (respraying over old paint): lower upfront cost, lasts 2–4 years, does not remove sub-surface corrosion. Full renovation (sandblasting Sa 2.5 + epoxy + PUR 2K): lasts 8–12 years, removes all corrosion down to bare metal. The cheaper option conceals problems rather than fixing them.

Sa 2.5 is the cleanliness grade per ISO 8501-1: blast-cleaned steel with no visible rust, mill scale or coatings on at least 95% of the surface — down to bare metal. This is the minimum requirement before a professional protective coating. Lower grades risk sub-coating corrosion.

Full cycle (sandblasting + two-coat epoxy + two-coat PUR + curing): 5–7 working days. Combined with pneumatic repairs, welding or TDT preparation: 7–14 days. We schedule the work to minimise total downtime — no additive delays.

Yes. We match colour from a RAL code or a sample from an undamaged area. Logos, lettering and reflective markings (mandatory by regulation) are applied from supplied artwork or reproduced from existing markings.

Paint renovation alone does not require a TDT review. If welding on the pressure vessel tank is carried out as part of the renovation, a special TDT review is required. We advise you before starting work — no surprises.

Yes — and this is the most common scenario. The trailer is in the workshop for 7–12 days: painting, aeration pad replacement, valves, seals and TDT documentation preparation. The inspector visits 5–10 days after the service is complete. One visit — comprehensive overhaul.
