In Brief
EBS (Electronic Braking System) diagnostics covers Wabco TEBS G2/G3/G4 and Haldex EB+ Gen 2/3 systems. Fault code reading, sensor calibration, module programming. Mobile diagnostics on the A4 within 100 km of Chorula: 45–110 min response. Quotation on request.
Electronic braking systems (EBS) have replaced conventional pneumatic ABS in modern silo trailers. Wabco TEBS G2/G3 or Haldex EB+ is the standard in bulk trailers and cement tankers. An EBS fault is not merely a dashboard warning — it represents a real risk of roadside detention and degraded braking performance, particularly under full load.
PHS Magnum has full diagnostic equipment for EBS systems from all leading trailer manufacturers.
EBS systems — what they are and how they work
EBS electronically controls brake pressure at each individual wheel on the trailer. Unlike conventional ABS, EBS actively adjusts braking force according to axle load, reducing the risk of wheel lockup and ensuring balanced braking.
Key components:
- EBS central module — the computing and control unit
- ABS wheel speed sensors — at each wheel
- EBS modulator valves — control pneumatic pressure
- Axle load sensor — adjusts braking force to payload
- Power supply and CAN bus — communicates with the tractor via ISO connector
Computer EBS diagnostics
Full diagnostics covers:
- Reading active and historical fault codes (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)
- Sensor testing — verifying speed, pressure and load signals
- Modulator valve testing — checking correct operation at specified pressures
- Calibration — setting parameters for the axle configuration and load
- Software update — when replacing a module or changing trailer configuration
Typical EBS faults in silo trailers
Broken ABS sensor cable — the most common fault, especially after winter. Cables at the wheels are exposed to mechanical damage; cores develop cracks. Symptom: fault code on a specific wheel, ABS warning light.
Contaminated or damaged tone wheel — road deposits or rust interfere with speed reading. Cleaning or tone wheel replacement.
Faulty modulator valve — symptom: uneven braking, pressure fault codes. Valve replacement with system recalibration.
Configuration errors after repair — when axles, wheels or other mechanical components are changed, EBS parameters may need updating.
Central module failure — uncommon but costly. Requires reprogramming a new unit with the trailer’s parameters.
EBS repairs — what we do
- ABS sensor replacement (all wheels and brands)
- Sensor cable repair and replacement
- Wabco/Haldex modulator valve replacement
- EBS central module replacement with programming
