The brake system is responsible for the safety of the entire road train. Modern silo trailers have electronically controlled EBS brakes instead of conventional ABS — the system actively controls braking force at each wheel according to axle load. An EBS fault is not just a warning light: it represents a real reduction in braking effectiveness, particularly under full load.

Drum brakes — brake shoe and lining replacement, drum replacement, automatic slack adjuster service. Drum and lining thickness measurement at every service.

Disc brakes — disc and brake pad replacement, caliper service, flexible hose inspection.

Brake cylinders and parking spring brakes — replacement on leakage or seizing. Spring brake units (Tristop) — serviced with functional test.

ABS/EBS systems — computer diagnostics, ABS sensor replacement, wiring repair, modulator valve replacement, central module replacement or programming.

Air suspension — air bag replacement, levelling valve service, hose and fitting replacement.

Typical silo trailer brake failures

Seized brake cylinder (most common cause of overheated wheel) — internal corrosion in older cylinders. Symptom: smell and smoke at the wheel, hot drum after a short run. Immediate replacement required.

Broken ABS sensor cable — frequent after winter, at cables running along the chassis. Symptom: ABS warning light, fault code on a specific wheel.

Faulty automatic slack adjuster — shoes don’t self-adjust, clearance increases, braking effectiveness declines. Symptom: “long” brake lever, increased cylinder stroke.

Compressed parking spring brake — if the Tristop spring leaks: parking brake fails to hold. Vehicle can roll. Critical fault.

Minimum: every 12 months (annual service) or every 100,000 km. For intensive operation (cement, heavy loads, mountain routes): every 80,000 km or 8 months. Earlier if visible symptoms of degraded braking appear.

Yes. Non-functional ABS, worn linings below 2 mm, leaking brake cylinder or faulty air spring are all grounds for rejection. Brake service before a vehicle inspection or TDT renewal is recommended.
