At a glance
Talc transport by silo trailer requires a heated transloading hall, a dry silo trailer and moisture control at every stage. PHS Magnum Chorula regularly serves talc producers from Poland and importers supplying the EU market. ISO 9001:2015, own silo wash on site (drying check after washing), 200 tonnes per day of transloading capacity, 31 silo trailers in the fleet. Located 4 km from the A4.
What talc is and why its transport requires attention
Talc is hydrated magnesium silicate (3MgO·4SiO₂·H₂O), found as a white or greyish fine-grained powder. The most common commercial fractions — 10–40 microns, some technical grades even below 5 microns. It is used as:
- A filler in plastics (PP, PE — improved stiffness, cost reduction)
- A paper industry raw material (coating, stock filling)
- An ingredient of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals (powders, bases)
- A filler in paints and varnishes
- A ceramic raw material (porcelain, glaze)
Material characteristics that affect transport:
- Fine grain size — dusts easily, requires a tight trailer and ventilation during unloading
- Hygroscopicity — absorbs moisture from the air; in a trailer with residual moisture after washing it will cake
- Bulk density typically 0.6–0.9 t/m³ — the payload of a 55–65 m³ silo trailer is limited to 18–22 t (not the 25 t on the registration plate)
- Flow index — depending on the fraction and the presence of calcite, some talcs stick together without antistatic agents
How we carry out talc transport
1. Raw material intake
Talc is usually delivered in 500–1200 kg big bags (FIBC with a PE liner — tight against dust and moisture), less often in octabins or 25 kg sacks. We accept 20’/40’ sea containers with big bags directly.
2. Transloading in a moisture-controlled hall
The PHS Magnum transloading hall is heated and moisture-controlled (< 60%) — the key parameter for talc. Gravity transloading through a screen eliminates lumps that could block unloading at the consignee.
3. Silo trailer with a drying document
After the silo trailer is washed (before talc loading) we issue a drying document with an internal moisture check. Talc goes into a documentedly dry trailer — not one that is “freshly washed but still damp”.
4. Transport to the consignee
The trailer departs directly from Chorula to the consignee. Pneumatic unloading via the on-board blow-off (trailer compressor) or the consignee’s installation. Coupling diameters — typically Storz ɸM 100 (4"), at some plants PERROT ɸM 108.
Talc transport parameters — at a glance
| Parameter | Value / characteristics |
|---|---|
| Raw material form | Fine-grained powder (typically 10-40 microns) |
| Inbound packaging | Big bags 500-1200 kg, octabins, 25 kg sacks, 20’/40’ containers |
| Means of transport | 55-65 m³ silo trailer, pneumatic unloading |
| Bulk density | approx. 0.6-0.9 t/m³ |
| Actual payload utilisation | typically 18-22 t (not the plated 25 t) |
| Critical hall parameter | relative humidity below 60%, heating |
| Quality control | cleaning screen + trailer drying document |
| ADR classification | pure talc — no ADR (blends: per MSDS) |
| Destinations | Poland and the EU (DE, CZ, AT, SK, NL, IT) |

Experience with talc
PHS Magnum handles regular talc deliveries for:
- Talc producers from Poland and neighbouring countries
- Importers offering technical-grade talc from Finland, Italy and China
- Plastics factories (mainly PP — talc as a filler)
- Paint and coating manufacturers
The profile of real contracts: volumes from tens to several thousand tonnes per year, regular deliveries (typically 1–4× per month to each receiving factory). A trial transloading at first contact — it lets us verify how the specific fraction behaves in our infrastructure.
