Full service: technical assessment, geometry measurement, removal, replacement or overhaul, mandatory EBS calibration (Wabco, Knorr-Bremse) and an operational test. A typical single-axle replacement takes 1-2 working days. Workshop in Chorula near Opole, Poland. Bookings: +48 602 716 551.

Silo trailer axle replacement — key aspects

Silo trailer axles are load-bearing components, critical to vehicle safety. After an accident — especially a rollover or side impact — axles can be permanently damaged even without externally visible deformation.

PHS Magnum replaces axles of all major European brands. Full service: technical assessment, removal, replacement, EBS calibration, documentation.

Axle brands we handle

BPW (Bergische Achsen)

The most popular brand in Europe. Full support:

  • BPW Air — air suspension (the most common on silo trailers)
  • BPW ECO Plus — weight-optimised generation
  • BPW Disc Brake System — disc brakes with EBS

SAF Holland

The second most popular brand. Most frequently encountered:

  • SAF M-Series — standard segment
  • SAF Modulair — modular system
  • SAF Integral — premium with integrated brakes

Mercedes-Benz tonnage axles

On premium trailers or special orders. Full support, parts from MB warehouses.

Hendrickson, Granning, ROR Meritor

Less common in Poland, but supported. Technical support + parts import.

Replacement or overhaul — how we choose the scope

After a technical assessment we recommend the optimal option. The table lays out typical scenarios and indicative working time:

State after the accidentRecommended actionIndicative time
Cracked or bent axle beamreplacement of the entire axle1-2 days (1 axle)
Pin play, worn hub bearingscomponent overhaul2-3 days
Only suspension air bags damagedbag replacement without touching the axle4-6 hours
Replacing 2-3 axles on a tri-axle trailerassembly-level replacement3-5 days

Each of these scopes ends with EBS calibration and a brake test. The choice depends on the extent of the damage and cost-effectiveness — with a badly bent beam an overhaul makes no sense, while with local play a pin and bearing replacement is enough. Post-repair braking system diagnostics is covered by silo trailer EBS diagnostics.

Axle replacement procedure

1. Diagnostics

  • Axle load distribution test (axle scale)
  • Geometry measurement (track width, toe angles)
  • Visual inspection of axle components (cracks, deformations)
  • EBS diagnosis — fault code readout from the Wabco/Knorr module

2. Axle removal

  • Disconnecting the braking system (pneumatics, EBS signals)
  • Disconnecting the suspension air bags
  • Removing the axle from the frame (hangers, trailing arms)
  • Removing the wheels

3. Replacement or overhaul

Full axle replacement: a new BPW/SAF unit from stock, mounting on the frame, connecting EBS and pneumatics.

Overhaul:

  • Replacement of the main pins (mechanical play)
  • Replacement of hub bearings (high-mileage wear)
  • Replacement of brake pads (while at it)
  • Overhaul of brake callipers
  • Replacement of suspension air bags (if worn)

4. EBS calibration

Mandatory after an axle replacement:

  • Pressure test of the braking system (up to 8 bar)
  • Wheel sensor calibration (pulses per revolution)
  • EBS module calibration (Wabco TEBS or Knorr-Bremse)
  • Brake test laden and unladen
  • Printout of the EBS module report

5. Operational test

  • Control drive at various speeds
  • Emergency braking test
  • Air suspension operation check
  • Check of all signals (lighting, indicators)

Air bag replacement (suspension)

A frequent “soft” repair — air bags wear over time (cracks, air leaks). Replacement:

  • Standard set of 4 or 6 bags (depending on the number of axles)
  • Material: cord-reinforced EPDM rubber (BPW Air System), polyurethane on some SAF models
  • Replacement time: 4-6 working hours
  • Test: 8 bar pressure, no leaks for 30 minutes

Frequently Asked Questions

BPW (Bergische Achsen, the most popular in Europe), SAF Holland (US/EU), Mercedes-Benz tonnage axles (for premium trailers), Hendrickson (US), Granning, ROR Meritor. For each brand: access to original parts, replacement expertise, calibration after the repair.

It depends on the extent of the damage: a cracked axle beam — replacement of the entire axle; damaged pins, bearings or brakes — overhaul with replacement of the damaged components; damage limited to the suspension air bags — bag replacement without touching the axle. PHS Magnum performs a technical assessment and recommends the optimal option.

After an axle replacement the EBS system (Wabco, Knorr-Bremse) must be calibrated. Required: wheel sensor calibration, pressure test of the braking system, control module calibration. We issue an EBS test report after the repair. Without calibration — brake performance may be incorrect.

The axle itself is not part of the pressure vessel — TDT inspection does not cover axles. BUT if the tank mountings or the load-bearing frame under the tank were disturbed during the axle repair — an extraordinary TDT inspection is required. A standard axle replacement (without touching the tank mountings) does not require TDT.

Replacement of a single axle (standard BPW/SAF type): 1-2 working days. Replacement of 2 or 3 axles on a tri-axle trailer: 3-5 days. Axle overhaul with pin and bearing replacement: 2-3 days. All including EBS calibration and a brake test.

Standard items (pins, bearings, brake pads, BPW Air and SAF M-Series air bags) — from stock or within 24-48h. Complete axles — sourced in 5-10 days from BPW Polska or SAF Polska warehouses. Trailing arms and model-specific components — to order.

Symptoms of hidden damage are: uneven tyre wear on one axle, the rig pulling to one side, incorrect load distribution on an axle scale, and geometry deviations (track width, toe). That is why after a rollover or side impact we measure geometry and load distribution rather than relying on a visual check — the axle beam can be permanently bent with no visible trace.

After the replacement we perform the mandatory EBS calibration, a pressure test of the braking system and an operational test — a control drive with emergency braking and suspension checks. Only the EBS module report and a passed functional test qualify the trailer to return to the road. Without calibration the brakes may not work correctly.

Often yes — the air bags are disconnected when the axle is removed, and it is worth replacing any that are already worn (cracks, air leaks). After assembly we check the system for leaks and verify the operation of the levelling valves. We also replace air bags alone as a separate 'soft' repair, without touching the axle.
