A silo trailer after 8–12 years looks worn even when the tank is sound and the pneumatic system works. Rusted walls, peeling paint, illegible markings – this is not just aesthetics. Sub-surface corrosion advances invisibly, attacking the metal beneath the old coating. Effective prevention requires full renovation down to bare metal with a professional coating system.

Abrasive sandblasting Sa 2.5 – cleaning down to bare metal, removing all old paint, rust and mill scale. Without this step, every subsequent coat is temporary.
Two-coat epoxy primer – adhesion to cleaned steel or aluminium, moisture barrier, sealing metal micro-pores. Thickness: 60–80 µm. Corrosion category: C4 (industrial, aggressive urban/marine environment).
Two-coat PUR 2K topcoat – two-component polyurethane, 50–80 µm per coat. Hardness and scratch resistance, UV-stable (no yellowing), chemical resistance. Durability: 8–12 years under normal operation.
Total wet film thickness: 220–320 µm (compare with automotive: 80–120 µm).
What is included in paint renovation
Standard scope:
- Tank (side walls, bottom, end caps)
- Chassis frame
- Axle and suspension guards
- Access ladder and walkway platform
Optional extras:
- Aluminium elements (renovation preserving aluminium texture)
- Reflective markings (required by regulation – renewed at every renovation)
- Company logos and lettering
- Anti-corrosion treatment of bolts and fasteners (nyloc/inox)
When to combine renovation with other work
The trailer spends 7–14 days in the workshop. The ideal opportunity to carry out simultaneously:
- Aeration pad replacement – chambers are already accessible during painting disassembly
- Valve and seal replacement – routine pneumatic service
- TDT documentation preparation – if the certificate is approaching expiry
- Minor tank weld repairs – with the painter and welder in the same location
