Check valves for multi-brand fleets — one base in Chorula
On a silo trailer the check valve plays a seemingly minor yet critical role: it makes sure that air and material in the pneumatic line flow in one direction only, and do not flow back towards the compressor or into the discharge line when pressure drops. A seized or leaking check valve is a common, though easily overlooked, cause of reduced discharge performance — regardless of whose factory the trailer came from.
PHS Magnum has been operating since 1990 and services mixed fleets: silo trailers by Spitzer, Feldbinder, Kässbohrer and other European manufacturers pass through our one workshop in Chorula. That is why we treat check valves not as a single-brand component, but as pneumatic line valve gear matched to the actual geometry and connection diameter of the specific unit. Our range covers two basic designs — Europa-type straight check valves and angle (inclined) Y-type valves — plus complete repair kits for angle valves, which let you rebuild the working part instead of replacing the whole valve.
Technical specification
Straight check valves — Europa type
A straight design with a linear channel path, for universal applications. Used where the line layout does not require routing at an angle.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Design | straight, Europa type |
| Application | universal |
| Body material | brass |
| Seal | NBR |
| Max. operating temperature | 100°C |
| Connection | internal thread in inches |
| DN size / thread (inches) | DN25–1", DN40–1 1/2", DN50–2", DN65–2 1/2", DN80–3" |
Angle (inclined) check valves — Y type
A body with an inclined channel path, for universal applications. Chosen when the installation geometry requires routing the valve gear at an angle.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Design | angle / inclined, Y type |
| Application | universal |
| Body material | brass or stainless steel |
| Seal | silicone |
| Connection | internal thread in inches |
| DN size / thread (inches) | DN25–1", DN40–1 1/2", DN50–2", DN65–2 1/2", DN80–3" |
Repair kits for angle valves
A complete repair kit is available in every size from 1". Each element can also be ordered separately — which is enough at a planned inspection when only the working part has worn.
| Element | Material |
|---|---|
| Spring | stainless steel |
| Poppet (disc) | stainless steel / brass, with silicone seal |
| Cap (bonnet) | brass |
Material selection depends on the medium carried: the brass version is universal, while the stainless steel version with a silicone seal is preferred for food-grade versions and moist media, where the corrosion risk is higher.
Compatibility with silo trailer brands
Check valves are not tied to a brand — what they share is the connection standard and the type of pneumatic line. PHS Magnum matches them for fleets of various manufacturers:
- Spitzer (SF and SK series) — on aluminium silo trailers of the non-tipping SF and tipping SK series, check valves work in the compressed-air line that fluidises and conveys the material during discharge.
- Feldbinder (EUT and KIP) — on horizontal EUT trailers and KIP (Kippsilo) tipping silos, check valves maintain stable pressure in the aeration and discharge circuit; for stainless steel food-grade versions we prefer the stainless version.
- Kässbohrer (K.SSK and K.SSL) — on Kässbohrer K.SSK and K.SSL silo trailers we select the valve analogously, by connection diameter and pneumatic line geometry.
- Other European manufacturers — for the remaining silo trailer brands we match the valve to the actual valve gear on the unit; we do not keep model tables here, but fit the part to the connection actually installed.
In every case, the decision between the Europa-type straight version and the Y-type angle version follows from the channel path in the particular installation, while the choice of material and seal follows from the operating conditions and temperature requirements. We work in the DN25–DN80 series (1"–3" thread); when ordering, please tell us which valve is currently fitted.
The most common faults — regardless of brand
- Air or material flowing back when closed — usually a worn or hardened poppet seal; the fix: a part from the repair kit instead of replacing the whole valve.
- A weakened or corroded spring — the poppet stops closing properly; replace the stainless steel spring from the kit.
- The poppet sticking due to deposits or debris from the line — clean and replace the poppet; with moist media it pays to switch to the stainless version.
- Operation beyond the temperature range — the Europa type works up to 100°C; exceeding it shortens the NBR seal’s life.
- Leakage under the cap — replace the brass cap (bonnet) from the kit.
We do not quote made-up service life intervals — they depend on the medium, the pressure and the frequency of operation.
Chorula warehouse
We supply straight and angle check valves and repair kits from stock at the PHS Magnum warehouse in Chorula near Opole, 4 km from the A4. We stock what actually moves in mixed-fleet service — typical sizes and complete repair kits for angle valves. Individual elements (springs, poppets, caps) and special sizes come via direct supply.

Selecting parts for mixed-brand fleets
In a mixed fleet a check valve is selected by line geometry and connection diameter, not by tank brand — what differs is where in the system it works and which material suits the medium in question. On Spitzer SF/SK aluminium trailers the check valve protects the compressed-air line that fluidises and conveys the material during discharge; the choice between the Europa-type straight version and the Y-type angle version follows from the channel path in the specific installation. In Feldbinder EUT horizontal tanks the valves maintain stable pressure in the aeration and discharge circuit, and for stainless steel food-grade versions we lean towards the stainless version with a silicone seal; in the tipping KIP silo, where discharge is pressure-assisted, proper valve closure conditions stable pressure across the whole line. On Kässbohrer K.SSK/K.SSL silo trailers selection proceeds analogously — by connection diameter and line geometry.
Comparatively, two shared decisions matter most for a mixed fleet: the channel type (straight Europa versus angle Y) and the material and seal (brass with NBR universally, stainless steel with silicone for moist media and food-grade versions). The same two decisions are repeated across trailers from different manufacturers, so one range of valves and repair kits covers the whole fleet without dividing it by brand.
The role of the central warehouse in the network
The central warehouse in Chorula simplifies check valve support in a fleet made up of several brands, because instead of running separate procurement for each manufacturer, the fleet stocks a shared size series from a single point. The availability of repair kits is particularly valuable here: we keep typical sizes and complete kits for angle valves off the shelf, so in many cases the working part — spring, poppet, cap — is rebuilt instead of replacing the whole valve. Individual elements and special sizes are covered by direct supply, and the location by the A4 shortens the time it takes parts to reach destinations across the country and markets throughout the EU. For a mixed fleet, one enquiry covers trailers of different brands at once, because selection comes down to the actual valve gear on the vehicle.
What to watch for across brands
- Channel path in the installation — where the line runs straight, the Europa type is enough; where an inclined run is needed, the Y type is chosen.
- Medium and food-grade versions — with moist media and food-grade trailers, a stainless steel body with a silicone seal is the sensible choice over brass with NBR.
- Repair instead of replacement — regardless of brand, with angle valves it pays to keep a repair kit in stock; rebuilding the working part is faster and cheaper than replacing the whole valve.
- Temperature margin — the Europa-type straight version works up to 100°C; exceeding this range shortens the NBR seal’s life, so hotter lines call for a different variant.
- Flow direction — at every replacement, check the valve’s orientation, because backflow destabilises pressure regardless of the condition of the rest of the valve gear.
- Type consistency across the fleet — standardising the straight and angle designs across the whole fleet simplifies repair kit selection for several brands at once.
- Elements sold separately — the spring, poppet and cap are available individually, so at a planned inspection only the worn part is replaced.
- Early symptoms — backflow, leakage when closed and a pressure drop in the line are signals worth catching in any brand before tightness is lost completely.
- Kits in reserve on the road — with intensive work on EU routes it pays to keep a repair kit in the fleet, to shorten the stop when replacing the working part.
- One reference for several brands — in a fleet combining Spitzer SF/SK, Feldbinder EUT/KIP and Kässbohrer K.SSK/K.SSL, standardising the check valve type lets you rely on one index instead of a separate item for each manufacturer.
- Selection by line, not by brand — it is the medium, the channel routing and the mounting point on the given trailer that decide between the straight and angle types, not the logo on the tank.
In practice, for a mixed fleet this means that one well-framed enquiry — stating the valve type, size and medium — is enough to source both check valves and repair kits for trailers from different manufacturers. This approach distinguishes the hub catalogue from brand catalogues: instead of a single manufacturer, we describe a shared component seen from the level of the whole service network. As a result, a haulier running trailers of several brands side by side does not have to keep parallel parts stocks, but relies on a single proven range of check valves and repair kits matched solely to the vehicle’s actual valve gear.
