In short
Half-pipe tipper trailer repair is above all welding of the body (floor, sidewalls, corners) made of S355 or Hardox steel, straightening after impacts, and tailgate repair. A half-pipe works with aggregates and excavated material — abrasion and overloading cause fatigue cracks in predictable places. PHS Magnum in Chorula welds, straightens, and paints half-pipe bodies, with a crane up to 10 tonnes.
The half-pipe works hardest in the whole fleet
A half-pipe tipper trailer (tub trailer) carries soil, aggregates, and rubble — abrasive loads, dropped in by excavator bucket, often overloaded. The body takes mechanical impacts and wears from the inside. The result: cracks in recurring places.
Where a half-pipe cracks
- The floor — in the discharge zone and under direct bucket impacts
- The floor-to-sidewall transition — bending stress concentration
- Rear corners at the tailgate — tearing and cracking
- Around reinforcements and hinges — welding notches
Scope of half-pipe repair
Body welding. We repair cracks in S355 and Hardox steel. For Hardox we select the wire and preheating so the weld does not crack again — the methodology is described in welding Hardox tipper bodies.
Straightening and bodywork. We straighten bent sidewalls and deformed corners; for serious damage we replace the plating section.
Tailgate and hinges. The part most often torn off — straightening, welding, replacement of hinges and locks, adjustment.
Tipping hydraulics. Leaks and a sinking body are a separate topic — tipper cylinder overhaul.
Anti-corrosion painting. After welding: sandblasting, epoxy primer, topcoat — a half-pipe corrodes from below faster than other trailers.
Symptom → cause → repair
| Symptom | Cause | Repair |
|---|---|---|
| Floor crack in the discharge zone | bucket impacts, abrasion | welding in a reinforcement or section replacement |
| Rear corner losing tightness | tearing during discharge | welding with notch relief |
| Sidewall bulges and dents | overloading, mechanical impacts | straightening; if serious — plating replacement |
| Torn / skewed tailgate | overloading, worn hinges | straightening, welding, hinge and lock replacement |
| Corrosion from below | moisture, worn-through paint layer | sandblasting, epoxy primer, topcoat |
How a half-pipe repair proceeds — step by step
- Inspection and quote. We assess the scope (body, tailgate, hydraulics, paint) and prepare an estimate; for accident damage we produce photo documentation. Ask for a quote.
- Weld preparation. Grinding out and exposing the cracks, bevelling the edges; for Hardox, wire selection and preheating according to thickness.
- Welding and straightening. Crack repair, straightening of sidewalls and corners, plating section replacement if needed.
- Tailgate and hinges. Straightening, welding, replacement of hinges and locks, fit adjustment.
- Painting. Sandblasting, epoxy primer, topcoat — with emphasis on the underside, which corrodes fastest.
